[Vegetarian Recipe]: RM5.25 Fava Beans (Ful) with Lebanese Bread

This is a Yemeni Vegetarian recipe that is full of flavor, healthy, easy, and cheap to make.
Ful is the Arabic word for Broad Beans (Fava Beans or Ful). This recipe will be a great crowd pleaser if you have guests over.
CAUTION: As delicious as this recipe is, it does not freeze and reheat well. I’ve tried, the beans become watery. So this will be a one-time meal recipe only.
Ingredients
These are the ingredients to make 2 portions of Ful. Assuming you have most of the stuff already in your kitchen, the active ingredient prices are stated in the parenthesis:
- 1 Can of Fava Beans (RM 5.50)
- 1 medium to large Yellow Onion
- 2 fresh tomatoes (RM 1)
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 teaspoon of cumin seed powder
- 1 teaspoon of coriander seed powder
- 2 teaspoon of tomato puree
- 2 teaspoon of chili paste
- coriander leaves (RM 1.50)
- Lebanese bread (RM 2.50)
The total cost for active ingredients (with prices listed above) is RM 10.50. This meal can serve a min of 2 persons, which brings the price per meal to RM 5.25.
Instructions
STEP 1: Dice 1 white onion and sweat them in a pan with olive oil on low heat.
STEP 2: Put in 2 teaspoons of chili paste.
STEP 3: While sweating the onions, chop the garlic and toss it into the pan.
STEP 4: Put in 1 teaspoon each of cumin seed powder and coriander seed powder. Then, add two teaspoons of tomato puree into the pan and mix everything. It should look like this:
STEP 5: Dice the two fresh tomatoes and toss them in. Stir until the tomatoes are soft but not overdone.
STEP 6: Open the can of fava beans and pour all the contents into the pan.
STEP 7: Fill the can with water and put that in the pan as well. Let to simmer on low heat while stirring for about 7 mins.
STEP 8: Chop coriander leaves and toss into the mix once you’re about ready to serve.
Put in a bowl and serve with Lebanese bread, or whichever bread that is sturdy enough to scoop the bean paste into your mouth.
