Nasi Ayam Chee Meng Bukit Bintang – Cheap Local Food Away from Tourist Traps
Bukit Bintang has a great mix of upmarket restaurants from all cultures. But if you’re on a budget or trying to avoid the typical tourist traps, this is a budget-friendly local chicken rice shop that I highly recommend.
Pros
- Cheap & good local food in Bukit Bintang.
- Down to earth unlike some pretentious restaurants around the area.
- Close to all the other attractions.
Cons
- Traffic jams.
- Avoid lunch crowd whenever possible.
The Ambience – Expect Typical Kopitiams

Expect nothing fancy with the interior of nasi ayam Chee Meng. The interior would look like any other typical Kopitiams in Malaysia.
The place is always crowded, especially during lunch & most of the clientele are local customers, which is how you can tell that the food will be good.
I noticed that there were a lot of Indonesian tourists that dine here thanks to Indonesian Influencers mentioning this place on social media.

In December 2021, a plate of nasi ayam at Chee Meng is RM11.30, which is pretty cheap for Bukit Bintang rates.
You can expect to pay around RM 25 per person if you ordered a few items to share between your dining table with individual drinks.
The Food that We Ordered
Here is what we ordered:
- 2 x roasted chicken rice
- Kerabu mangga (mango salad)
- Fried omelette
- 1 x teh limau ice (iced lime tea)
- 1. iced barley & lemon

You can pick between the steamed or fried chicken. I like the crispy skin, so I’d always opt for the fried chicken over steamed chicken.
The chicken portion is larger than what I usually get at Nasi Ayam Hailam:

Our favorite side dish is the kerabu mangga (mango salad), priced at RM13 for a small plate that can be shared between 2 persons.
It’s a little spicy, but I like the contradictive salty & sour flavors, soft texture of the mango & crunchy bits of the fried anchovies that magically complement one another.
It’s very refreshing to have the salad in between bites of the chicken rice. I highly recommend you to try it out:

Getting There & Parking
Getting there by car could be quite troublesome as the Bukit Bintang area is highly congested.
You can park at any mall parking nearby, or the open-air parking spot close to Jalan Alor like this one.
