He Blocked Me on Twitter! How Not to Cold DM a Potential Client
There was this UK guy I followed on Twitter.
One of his tweets about making money online struck a chord with me.
He was marketing himself as a 15-year copywriter.
His bio was selling a copywriting course.
The landing page, the video intro & his testimonials are A+
It was good!
Anyway, in the past few days, he DM-ed me on Twitter.
“Hi Helmi, I see that you’ve been following me but haven’t bought my course,
Want to hear how my course can generate you $2 to $5k a month?”
Who doesn’t want that? So I said: “Sure, tell me all about it”
[insert sales pitch] pretty convincing stuff with an amazing money-back guarantee.
The only thing stopping me was the $1,500 price tag.
Which is really steep for someone who’s not earning Western currencies.
So I left him on read (common after you reveal your price).
He DM-ed me again in the following days saying that he was willing to video chat to align my goals (to sell his stuff).
Then I said, the price is my biggest obstacle.
He replied “As opposed to what?” almost offended by me saying that his course is expensive.
He proceeded to ask a series of questions but the energy was very aggressive.
It felt like he was antagonizing me for not buying his $1500 course.
“Look, I can’t afford your stuff.”
He then blocked me on Twitter.
LOL
I was taken back a bit.
Because, as someone who sells online courses & frequently does cold DM outreach myself,
I’m puzzled by his business acumen.
If I were in his shoes, I know not everyone can afford my services right away.
You need time for prospects to bond with your online character.
Then more time to get them to like & trust you.
Here’s what I’d say if I were I got rejected during a cold outreach:
“thank you for your time.
since you have some issues with XX, here’s a FREE case study that will help to solve your problem.
I hope we’ll communicate again in the future!”
That sounds classy & respectful.
Blocking me does not make any business sense.
It brought me from a ‘maybe’ in the future to a definite ‘NO’ & I’ll tell my network to not go with this guy too.
Which made me think his entire business is a SCAM.
Networking is the kind of stuff we need to educate more people to do.
It’ll make the world a better place.
